Recognizing God’s Voice

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me”. John 10:27

Many have grown up in an environment where we have been taught religion (practices, rules, expectations), not relationships, leading to confusion and second-guessing when they hear God’s voice. Many people miss divine direction due to a lack of recognition. John 10:27 highlights that true believers can recognize God’s voice and follow Him. Three voices are competing for our attention: the flesh, the enemy, and the Spirit, each with distinct characteristics and impact on decision-making. We must learn to distinguish between them and choose the only one that offers truth, hope and peace.

The Flesh’s Voice

The flesh is urgent, impulsive, and comfortable, seeking ease rather than obedience. It is portrayed as wanting pleasure over purpose, leading to short-term gratification but long-term consequences. The flesh’s voice is contrasted with God’s will, which often requires sacrifice and effort.

The Enemy’s Voice

The enemy’s voice is subtle, condemning, and deceptive, using half-truths to sow doubt and fear. The enemy’s strategy is to attack identity, making individuals question their relationship with God and their own worth. In the garden, when speaking to Eve, the enemy questioned God’s words, and he uses the same tactics today. The enemy’s voice is characterized by accusation, isolation, and manipulation, which are clear signs that it is not from God.

The Spirit’s Voice

The Spirit’s voice is peaceful, clear, and consistent, bringing conviction without condemnation.

The Spirit’s voice challenges individuals but always calls them back, leading to surrender rather than shame. Matthew 11:28 reminds us that Jesus offers rest to the weary, illustrating the Spirit’s role in bringing peace and clarity. The Spirit’s voice aligns with scripture, confirms through wise counsel, and brings a sense of peace that may not always make sense.

We live in a noisy, distracting world with so many voices speaking at us that we can become confused as to what decisions and choices to make. God speaks to us, but many don’t know how to listen or how to distinguish between who is talking. It is essential to determine God’s voice from other voices. God’s voice is consistent, clear, and brings peace. True recognition of God’s voice comes from building a relationship with Him, as His voice aligns with Scripture, brings clarity, and draws one closer to Him. Stop seeking louder signs and instead focus on building a deeper relationship with God.
